Ontario Business Name Registrations

We offer both manual over the counter and electronic registration services for registrations under the Ontario Business Names Act. Electronic registration services are only available for: Sole Proprietorships, General Partnerships and Business Names under a Corporation.

To determine the requirements, fees and required forms click on the desired registration type in the list below.


MBL - Master Business License - Starting May 2001 individuals who register, amend or renew a name under the Business Names Act will receive a Master Business License. A MBL is not issued for a registration under the Limited Partnership Act.

BN - Business Number vs. BIN - Business Identification Number
The Business Number (BN)is a federal number issued by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) used for Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), payroll deductions and/or corporate income tax. A seperate filing with CRA is required to activate these tax accounts.

The Business Identification Number (BIN) is assigned by the Companies Branch's - Ontario Business Information System and is not the Federal Business number issued by CRA.

Business Name Registration -
Form 1 Sole Proprietorship/General Partnership
Form 2 - Business Name for a Corporation


Sole Proprietorship - this form is used to register an unincorporated business with one (sole) owner. The owner must be an individual and not a corporation. For a business name registered to a Corporation click here.

General Parnterhship - this form can also be used to register an unincorporated business name with 2 or more owners. The individuals may consist of individuals, corporations or other unincorporated businesses. (Not the same as a Limited Partnership.)

Business Name: - this form is used by a corporation that wishes to carry on business under a name that is different from the corporation's legal name. Not-for-profit corporations must also complete this form to publicly use a name other than their corporation name.

Manual 'Paper' Registrations
Documents prepared by client and filed in paper form over the counter by our clerks. Documents must be filed in duplicate and no signatures are required.
Note: A full version of Adobe is required to save the completed form.

Declaration under the Limited Partnerships Act
Form 3 - Limited Partnership


Limited Partnership - this form is used to register a special type of partnership that consists of at least one general partner and one or more limited partners. Subject to the Limited Partnerships Act, general partners have unlimited liability, while limited partners have limited liability up to the amount they contribute or agree to contribute to the limited partnership.

Business Registration - this form is used by a partnership or a limited partnership that wishes to carry on business under a name that is different from the original legal name.

Form 6 - Ontario Limited Liability Partnership
Extra-Provincial Limited Liability Partnership,
Extra Provincial Limited Liability Company


Limited Liability Partnership - this form is used to register a Limited Liability Partnership which has special characteristics related to liability and may ONLY be formed by professionals whose governing legislation permits an LLP to practice. In Ontario only lawyers, chartered accountants and certified general accountants may form a Limited Liability Partnership.

Extra-Provincial Limited Liability Partnership - must register the firm name to carry on business in Ontario and can only carry on business under that firm name.

Extra-Provincial Limited Liability Companies - a limited liability company is an unincorporated association, other than a partnership, formed under the laws of another jursidiction that grants its members limited liability.
There is no statute to establish an Ontario LLC.
